About the Item

Bernard Krigstein (American, 1919–1990) "Ausable River Bathers" 1980 Oil paint on canvas, stretcher bars The artist signed the bottom left of the painting. “Ausable River Bathers” is a vibrant figurative painting created in 1980 during one of Krigstein’s summer excursions to the Adirondacks and the Hudson River regions. The composition presents a group of reclining and seated figures immersed in the natural landscape, rendered with fluid, expressive brushwork and a heightened, lyrical color palette. Rather than focusing on precise anatomy, Krigstein emphasizes rhythm, movement, and the shared physicality of bodies at rest, allowing figures and environment to merge into a single, undulating surface. Bold colors of turquoise, coral, lavender, and warm earth tones animate the canvas, evoking the sensation of sunlight reflecting off water and skin. The overlapping poses create a sense of communal intimacy and timeless leisure, recalling classical bather scenes while remaining distinctly modern in execution. Krigstein’s painterly approach prioritizes emotional atmosphere over narrative, inviting the viewer into a moment of suspended summer calm. Painted fully in oil, this work reflects Krigstein’s lifelong engagement with the human figure and landscape as vehicles for mood and memory. “Ausable River Bathers” stands as a compelling example of his later figurative practice, blending modernist color sensibility with a deeply personal connection to place. Bernard Krigstein (1919–1990): Bernard Krigstein was an influential American artist and illustrator best known for his groundbreaking contributions to mid-20th-century comic art and visual storytelling. Active during the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, Krigstein pushed the medium beyond pulp entertainment, introducing sophisticated pacing, psychological depth, and cinematic composition that reshaped narrative illustration. After studying at the High School of Music Art and the Art Students League in New York, Krigstein worked across multiple creative fields, including comics, fine art, illustration, and teaching. He is most celebrated for his work with EC Comics in the 1950s, particularly on titles such as Shock SuspenStories, Crime SuspenStories, and Weird Science. His story “Master Race” is widely regarded as one of the most important and formally innovative comics ever produced, noted for its fragmented layouts, emotional intensity, and moral gravity. Beyond comics, Krigstein maintained a rigorous fine art practice, producing paintings and mixed-media works that reflect his interest in modernism, abstraction, and expressive form. His studio works often explore movement, psychological tension, and structure, bridging the worlds of illustration and contemporary art. Krigstein later taught at institutions including Pratt Institute, influencing generations of artists through his emphasis on composition, visual rhythm, and intellectual rigor. Today, his work is held in major museum collections and is increasingly recognized by collectors and scholars for its lasting impact on both comics and modern visual culture.

"Entering the Bus" Expressionist Figurative Composition Original Oil on Canvas
By Jakob Bokulich
Located in Soquel, CA
"Entering the Bus" Expressionist Figurative Composition Original Oil on Canvas Dynamic figurative composition by Bay area Figural, Abstract expressionist and notable Burning Man artist Jakob Bokulich (American, b. 1974). Several figures are crowded together, some of which are nude. Others are wearing typical clothing, and appear to be going out their daily lives. The expressive, slightly distorted faces and close placement of the figures is reminiscent of some of Francisco Goya's paintings. Titled, dated, and signed on verso: "Entering the Bus" May, 1992 Jake Bokulich No frame, but the artist has affixed black tape to the edges. Jakob Bokulich (1974, Santa Cruz, CA) is a self-trained, multi-disciplinary artist known for his paintings and kinetic sculptures. His work is in the collection of the Croatian Embassy in Paris, and he was awarded an Honorarium grant in 2018 by Burning Man for his 21 foot-tall sculpture "Big Pollinator," which was years in the making and involved the work of over 100 volunteers. The son of an auto mechanic, Bokulich began painting at age 12 after a house fire left his family homeless and he stayed temporarily with a local landscape painter. At 17 he left home for Europe - his art education was living in art squats and artist communities, and immersing himself in the museums and galleries of Europe. Drawing inspiration from living in a war zone in Croatia between 1993-1995, he exhibited in galleries in Paris, Saint-Tropez, Chamonix, and Split, Croatia. Transitioning back to the U.S, the artist helped build artist communities in San Francisco and Oakland, being deeply involved in spaces such as Cellspace, The Artship, and The Creamery. In this phase of his practice, Bokulich explored performance and ritual, co-writing and performing in the film Hysteria by Antero Alli. This prompted his stay in LA working in film and set design. In 2015 the seasoned and well rounded artist moved to New York City to return to a studio practice, now informed by his experiences in ritual, meditation, and unconventional self exploration. Bokulich’s work reinforces modes of seeing in a world where the senses have become neglected.
