Style : The Marxist orientation did not allow Bijan Chowdhury "to neglect reality and run after abstract art in a country gripped by poverty, prejudices, illiteracy..." He said as much in Dhaka to artists who followed the abstract style in search of a universal style. Because he believed in a balance of emotion and visuals, his paintings drew on narrative elements but his strong mastery of line never degenerated into illustration. His imagery was not explicit, nor was his symbolism Surreal. His stylistic features were inspired by Kalighat pat, built upon Socialist Realism, and blended in Mexican flavour. What emerged was human content dressed in lines and colours that found universal acceptance - as the series on Raga-Ragini or those inspired by folklore.

Born : Bijan Choudhury was born in (1931 - 2012) in Faridpur, Bangladesh.
Education : He moved to Calcutta where he studied at the Government College of Art and Craft, but because of his Marxist beliefs he was expelled before he could graduate. He returned to Bengal and graduated from the Dhaka Art College (now the University of Dhaka).
Art Career : Choudhury was one of the artists that formed the Society of Contemporary Artists in 1960. In 1964 together with Nikhil Biswas, Prakash Karmakar, Rabin Mondal, Jogen Chowdhury and Dharaj Chowdhury he founded the Calcutta Painters to break from the traditions of the Bengal School of Art. In the late '70s he became head of the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship.

Bijan Choudhury

This sale was titled “The Scholar’s Vision: The Pal Family Collection”.
The painting was described as “A reverse glass painting of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh – India, Maharashtra, 19th Century.
The holy family seated on the floor, mother and child in the lap of Shiva, with a red background and blue borders. Opaque pigments and metal leaf on glass. 12 x 16 in. (30.4 x 40.6 cm.)
Exhibited:
Durga: Avenging Goddess, Nurturing Mother, Norton Simon Museum of Art, 7 October 2005 – 27 March 2006″.
It carried an Auction estimate of USD 2,500 to USD 3,500 and Sold for USD 2,500 (not including Buyers Premium).
Allowing for inflation alone this would be over $4,300 in today’s value. At highest estimate, this would equate to over $6k in today’s value.
As an added bonus and proof of authenticity the painting still retains it’s original Christie’s Lot No. Label.

Amita Bhatt received her BFA from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara, India and her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland. Bhatt’s work has been exhibited at noteworthy venues such as the Bluestar Contemporary Art Center, Walters Art Museum, The Station Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Project Row Houses, all in the United States as well as Museo Pedro de Osma in Peru. Amita Bhatt has also been the recipient of several prestigious awards and recently served as a Grant Panelist on the National Endowment for the Arts. Bhatt digs deep into world philosophies and mythologies to answer questions pertaining to our political as well as personal belief systems.
