About the Item
Beach Girls II - As we wait for summer to arrive we can dream of days at the beach where all are cares are thrown to the wind. The sun roasts us as we relax into the soft sand. But we still have our cell phones as depicted in this painting of four women clad in their bikinis spread out on their beach towels. In the background, a father adjusts his daughter's bathing suit.
Artist Carole Garland captures summer fun as the blue Pacific ocean waves roll in and the seagulls fly toward shore. Garland studied figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago and finds the half-dressed beachgoers an ideal way to contemplate the human figure. Inhibitions are relaxed and no one is paying attention. Garland uses the color red, which bounces around the painting, as a way to unite the assembled characters and the image.
The 20"x24" oil painting on wood panel is wired for ease of hanging. The 1 1/2 inch deep natural wood sides may serve as a frame.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy.
To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
