A well-executed genre painting of a physician attending a lady by Casimir Van den Daele. A young woman is depicted sat in a chair in a richly decorated interior. To her left can be seen a tapestry covered table with a jug and an empty glass lying beside it, together with an untouched plate of fruit. As the doctor takes her pulse, the woman’s chaperone stands behind her listening intently to his diagnosis.
Casmirus Van den Daele was born in 1818 at Deinze, Belgium to Philippus Joannes Van den Daele and Anna Catharina van Damme. The family moved to Moerbeke near Lokeren, located north of Ghent sometime during the 1820’s. Although details of his early education are not recorded, he is known to have left home in 1831 to live Antwerp, before moving back to Ghent to study at the Academy of Arts.
From 1852, he lived and worked in Bruges where he established himself an artist and became known for painting genre and interior scenes. He returned to Antwerp and married Emilia Maria Peeters on 7 December, 1856. Van den Daele exhibited regularly throughout his life at the Triennial Salon which alternated between Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. He died in Meorbeke near Ghent on 1 April, 1880 aged 62.
Van den Daele flourished during the Biedermeier period, a time that saw the growth of the middle class in central Europe which stimulated an interest in the arts. He became famous for his intimate scenes of finely dressed people engaged in an activity often set within grand, highly detailed interiors. His meticulous observation of fabric and texture gives a richness to his paintings. Examples of his work can be found in private and public collections including the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels and the Warsaw National Museum.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.
