About the Item

'The Flea Market', oil on canvas, by Catherine Garros (circa 1990s). The viewer can feel the light of the French Riviera shine through this seductive artwork which depicts strollers shoppers wandering through a village's outdoor flea market. The artist paints using colours which express the essence of the Côtes d'Azur. Her themes are uplifting, optimistic and warm. Apply your sunscreen and enjoy the view. The painting is in good overall condition. It is signed by the artist in the lower right hand. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: Catherine Garros (b. 1954) always had a pencil in her hand. Self-taught, she is constantly creating. Although she did not benefit from formal academic art training, she did attend classes that reinforced her passion for watercolours. She started painting in oils in 1990. Little by little, she included human subjects in her canvases. It made a change from her landscapes. Influenced by Raoul Dufy and Henri Matisse, she is the youngest among the prominent names of the current Ecole Provençale. Studying her works, one immediately senses a feminine sensitivity; it's the precision in her brush which transmits a real joy for life, a childlike cheerfulness and optimism. Her paintings radiate a soft calm, a light rhythm, and a subtle palette. Catherine Garros is an outstanding colorist. Her luminous canvases engage us with life’s simple joys. They invite us to wander and celebrate life. She recreates a personal world but does not imitate or copy. Her subjects include busy fishermen, small ports, picturesque markets of Provence and carousels of yesteryear. They all make you smile. 'Place Pigalle', oil and gouache on art paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). Pigalle is well known to tourists who want to experience "Paris by night". It is home to some of Paris' most famous cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge which was immortalised by artist Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec's studio was here as was Picasso's, Vincent Van Gogh's and that of Andre Breton. In 1928 Josephine Baker opened her first nightclub next door to Breton's apartment. It is certainly a historical landmark of Paris and well known to so many visitors of this beautiful city. Génin painted Paris and Parisians and this is another one of his charming works among many held by this gallery. Please feel free to peruse them all on this platform. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre. Génin befriended the painters Frank Will, Gen Paul, Émile Boyer...
