CESARE MONTI (Brescia, 1891 - Bellano, 1959) Fatale, 1956 Oil on cavans, 78x40 cm Signed on lower left "C.Monti" Cesare Monti was born in Brescia in 1891. In 1906, at the age of only fifteen, he was sent by his father to Paris to learn the trade of coiffeur, but the young Monti was more struck by the artistic environment, at that time full of extraordinary stimuli and innovations. In 1912 he moved to Milan and became part of the nascent artistic movement. From 1920 to 1950 he exhibited fourteen times at the Venice Biennale - in 1940 with a personal room of thirty-eight works. His style, initially linked to the return to order, evolved chromatically after the Second World War until it reached a new maturity and an expressiveness of great decorative taste; nevertheless his great portraiture ability is renewed and reaches an extremely modern communicative ability. He died in Bellano, near Lake Como, in 1959. * * * This work, entitled "Fatale", shows how his evolution has led him to know how to represent the sensuality of female forms with extreme ease and effectiveness. Monti skilfully plays with colors, boldly combining purple and bright red. The face has a memory of Modigliani's work, which so fascinated little Monti during his first trip to Paris. Studiolo manages the Cesare Monti Archive in Milan and is the Artist's reference Gallery. The work is therefore registered in the Archive under number CM517.
