About the Item
Chittrovanu Mazumdar - Untitled
Acrylic on Canvas, 33 x 47 inches
(Framed
Delivered)
Chittrovanu Mazumdar’s acrylic on canvas is a powerful meditation on fragmentation and memory, where figuration and abstraction merge into a single, emotionally charged surface. At its center, a shadowy, indistinct figure anchors the composition, surrounded by expressive brushwork in black, gray, and violet that heightens its ambiguity and transforms it into a cipher for psychological states rather than a portrait. Below, four symbolic panels — a pointing hand, a purple square, blue flowers, and a red-lipped mouth — introduce fragments of gesture, desire, and decay, each functioning as a shard of meaning within the layered architecture of consciousness.
Mazumdar’s use of acrylic, shifting between opacity and translucence, underscores the tension between concealment and revelation, while the fractured composition evokes the instability of identity and the violence of memory. Within his broader repertoire, this work stands out for its narrative ambiguity and symbolic density, embodying his intellectual engagement with literature, postcolonial dislocation, and the poetics of rupture, while affirming his place as one of India’s most conceptually daring contemporary artists.
Chittrovanu Mazumdar (b. 1956) is a Kolkata-based contemporary artist whose practice spans painting, multimedia installations, and conceptual environments. Born in Paris to a Bengali father and French mother, Mazumdar blends poststructuralist thought with poetic materiality, creating works that resist categorization and evoke memory, language, and sensory depth. Educated at the Government College of Art
Craft, Calcutta, and briefly at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, he has exhibited internationally—from the Royal Academy in London to UNESCO-sponsored shows in Paris. Though not formally decorated with national awards, his critical acclaim, institutional commissions, and collaborations with spaces like Seagull Foundation and Bose Pacia affirm his stature as one of India’s most intellectually rigorous and visually immersive artists.

The exceptions are the faces such as the profiles of bearded men in which the content is a mere excuse for the lines to create a pattern of untrammeled playfulness. Of course the Japanese face (Portrait) attempts a straight portrait but for the cartoonist exaggeration of the chin and cheek.
