About the Item

Portrait of a Child with Pet Dog Italian School, early 1600's circle of Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) oil on canvas, framed Framed: 11.5 x 9 inches Board : 10.5 x 8.5 inches Provenance: private collection, France Condition: very good condition Description: This endearing early Italian Baroque portrait captures a young child holding a beloved pet dog, both gazing directly at the viewer with warm, expressive eyes. The child, dressed in a green garment with a delicate ruffled collar, exudes innocence and affection, while the dog, nestled closely, has a lively expression that adds charm to the piece. The artist’s attention to detail brings out the softness in the child’s face and the gentle texture of the pet’s fur. Possibly a preparatory study for a larger portrait, the work is quite adorable in this small scale. Close in every respect to the early 1600's Baroque master, Annibale Carracci, the work is most likely from his circle or a close follower. Annibale Carracci (1560–1609) was an influential Italian Baroque painter and one of the founding figures of the Baroque style, alongside artists such as Caravaggio. Born in Bologna, Italy, he was part of the Carracci family of painters, which included his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico. Together, they founded an art academy in Bologna called the Accademia degli Incamminati, which emphasized naturalism, a focus on the human form, and innovative techniques that marked a shift from the more formal and stylized Mannerism that preceded them.
