A charming 19th-century genre scene in the style of Edward Matthew Ward, RA (1816–1879), depicting a moment of festive folly set in the Caroline era. A gentleman, with playful intent, leans forward to offer a sprig of mistletoe to a lady, who regards him with a look of disapproval. The composition is rich in detail and is characteristic of Ward's flair for narrative. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with an oval slip. On canvas on stretchers.
