About the Item

The Wrestlers by Clyde Singer is an excellent Mid-Century painting of a popular Aschan subject. The artist George Bellows (1882-1925) was a precursor of Singer's who often depicted the gritty streets, athletics, and city dwellers in his art. Here, Singer, who was influenced by Bellows' work and that of other Ashcan artists, paints a moment of intensity as the wrestlers go head-to-head and the spectators watch with intense anticipation. An accomplished American Scene painter, Singer successfully captured the unique moments of everyday life during his long career. This painting was included in Clyde Singer's America exhibition and accompanying book. It is signed by the artist in the lower left. It is also signed and dated en verso. It is executed in oil paint on canvas and presented in a custom-made, hand-carved wood frame. Framed Dimensions: 42 H x 50 W Inches Image Dimensions: 32.5 H x 40.5 W Inches Born in Malvern, Ohio, forty miles south of Akron, Clyde Singer became known for his regionalist paintings in oil and watercolor of everyday landscapes and people. In 1933, he was awarded a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. It was during the Depression, and he lived a Spartan existence. His teachers included John Steuert Curry, Thomas Hart Benton, Kenneth Hayes Miller, and Ivan Olinsky. Adopting the Social Realist style, he tried to paint in the same locations as George Bellows and John Sloan, and he painted many scenes of the interior of McSorley's famous saloon that Sloan had depicted. He had a long history with the Butler Institute in Youngstown, OH.
