About the Item
Daphne Sweet, artist working and living in Missoula, Mt. Using acrylic, oil, clay, and fabric.
Bouncing between classical references and personal allegory, the paintings and found objects in my work reanimate historical motifs and paintings with bold color, heavy patterning, and playful mark making.
Familiar myths are often recontextualized with narrative using a visual vocabulary of personal emojis (vase, flames, oranges, grapes, cows, phones, cherubs, arrows, droplets, tiger stripe, columns, halos, venus,) repeating throughout the paintings creating a dialog between the work; and are reflected in physical forms as well.
By co-opting familiar tropes of antiquity, my work reimagines the narratives and symbolism of art history. The bold color and large figures in the work crowd into the compositions, the prominent color and excessive line work are continuously informing each other.
Stoic expressions of classic Greek sculptures, flirtatious line work of Rococo, lustrous fruit in Dutch still lives and graphic patterning cultivated by Matisse, are referenced throughout the work.
By removing the precious/remote view of antiquity and the ‘female nude’ from the male gaze, the figures assert their agency, reinforced by the size and bold colors demanded to be seen.

Daphne Sweet, a dynamic contemporary artist based in Montana, presents an arresting collection that transports the viewer into a world where myth and landscape are inextricably linked. Drawing from a profound, matriarchal upbringing and a deep engagement with the narratives of the American West, Sweet's practice spans painting and ceramics, yet remains unified by a distinctive, imaginative visual language. Sweet reclaims and reanimates historical artistic tropes—from the celestial figures of High Renaissance frescoes to the luscious movement of the Rococo—and recontextualizes them through a bold, feminist lens. Her compositions possess a complexity reminiscent of illuminated manuscripts, balancing intricate illustrative line work with a modern immediacy and a vivid, symbolic use of color. This juxtaposition breathes a playful, often electric energy into ancient forms.

About the Series:
For Dray, Philosophy deals in the abstract and abstraction is an indispensable tool in art and culture. Through his paintings, he reasserts that abstraction has been a part of humanity, all cultures in all ages. It’s an indispensable tool, as we create symbols, vessels to fill with allusions and messages. The resulting artwork have a strong sense of purpose.
Each painting contains hundreds of hand coloured trapezoid shapes, hand drawn with a sharp blade onto silver or gold leaf. Each coloured shape can be interpreted to represent an ‘atomic’ element. On its own a block of colour is insignificant but seen as part of a whole it becomes dynamic and alive reflecting on how nature works. The phenomena of light is also important to the work. The light of the sun in a room illuminates and reflects off the paintings as they come alive and change through time.
