About the Item
There is so much unknown, undiscovered, and mysterious about the ocean. Much of what we are taught encourages fear—we learn about rips and currents, big waves and sharks, hear of drownings and deaths, and are told to obey flags and rules. Yet anyone lucky enough to live near the ocean, and anyone able to swim, dive, or surf, knows how magical, liberating, and life-enhancing the ocean can be. My images are inspired by this tension between fear and love that defines our relationship with the ocean.
This series seeks to capture the feeling of sublime freedom that exists underwater—a space where we can be simultaneously vulnerable and unrestrained. There is a raw beauty in returning to our natural state, as the underwater world grants permission to release the constraints of everyday life and become weightless, brave, floating, and free. By confronting what scares us, we strip it of power, transforming our greatest fears into our greatest freedom.
I chose women as the subjects of these works because, for me, there is something profoundly beautiful in the fluidity and grace of the female form. It embodies the emotional and spiritual essence of freedom, moving with an elegance that feels entirely at home in the dappled light, patterns, and reflections beneath the surface of the ocean.
