About the Item
Last Breath explores the presence of the dead in the lives of the living through the bonds that do not disappear with the death of the body. At the centre is a human figure drawn into a dense network of lines that resemble roots, a nervous system, or surface fissures. These lines shape the space of the painting and metaphorically mark the traces and consequences a person leaves behind.
Contemporary notions of death often oscillate between two poles: the biological end of the body and the abstract idea of a “soul” that supposedly departs elsewhere. The work proposes a third dimension – the human being as a network of relationships and consequences. It raises the question: is it accurate to say that a person has “vanished” while their decisions, words and actions continue to affect others?
From this perspective, death appears not as an abrupt break but as a change in the mode of presence: the body no longer acts as a subject, yet the network of its consequences continues to operate in the world for a long time. The painting both honours these enduring impulses and invites reflection on whether the ongoing effect of our actions over time might be one possible form of human immortality.
