Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946, artist and teacher David Fertig studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and Art Institute of Chicago. Fertig has exhibited in museums and galleries in the United Kingdom, Canada, California, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Delaware, Connecticut, Washington and New Jersey. Fertig taught at the Philadelphia College of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Fertig's works are held in numerous public and private collections including the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Woodmere Museum, Colgate University, Evansville Museum of Arts and Sciences, Millersville State College and University of Minnesota.

The soldier is depicted wearing a back and breast plate over a red and yellow sleeved jacket tied with a sash around his waist. On his head, he wears a felt hat with red and white feathers and holds a sword in his hand. He is shown standing at the moated entrance of a fortified stone building with a portcullis. Beyond the raised portcullis, a group of soldiers can be seen in the shadows.
