About the Item
"Drummer in Red" is a vibrant painting both in the application of color, and the abstract movement of the background. Dennis has captured the musician in the midst of what might be a solo spot in a marching band performance. Added to that solo effort is the lack of detail in the background thus concentrating attention on the musician. This piece is framed and is signed by the artist.

Canadian Artist Dennis K. Smith’s distinctive artistic expressions result in works that come alive through the use of rhythmic brush work, choreographed passages of colour and strong contrast. His work projects honesty, simplicity and serenity that causes’ one to stop and to engage with the painting and its message. His lino prints were exhibited and sold in the Canada - Japan Exchange Print Exhibition held at the Chiba Shimin Gallery Image in Japan. He has exhibited at The Royal Ontario Museum, 2010, has had solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group shows.
Having worked for Chrysler Canada for thirty-four and a half years, Smith, now retired, teaches art full time in his LaSalle studio. He enjoys encouraging and motivating fellow artists to be true to their vision and to be honest in their artistic expressions and above all to let their work identify who they are.

Dennis K. Smith
A profound appreciation for life and devout faith in God are immediately discernible in painter Dennis K. Smith’s landscapes, portraits and other works.
Smith, who was born in 1949 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, is known for his expressive brushstrokes and ability to find inspiration for paintings even in the most humble scenes. He works to capture the emotional depth of a subject through painting with the hope of inviting interest that might not have existed before.
“I cannot remember the 1,053rd leaf of the tree, but I will remember the coolness of its shade on that hot summer day,” Smith has said of his work. His distinctive rhythmic brushstrokes, vivid color palettes and visual storytelling furthers that intensity and speaks to his love of music. In The Weary Blues (2013), a melancholy scene from a dimly lit jazz bar comes alive in wonderful detail. Smith also tells these stories through drawing, printmaking, sculpture and playwriting. Apart from his individual practice, Smith is also an active member of the community. He is a full-time art teacher at his LaSalle studio and cofounder and president of The Artists of Colour, a collective of Black artists in the Canadian diaspora. Their exhibition “Journeys” at the Amherstburg Freedom Museum in 2020 explored the Underground Railroad from a Canadian perspective.
Smith dedicated his decades-long career to the pursuit of beauty and honesty. He has exhibited in numerous shows including the Canada–Japan Exchange Print Exhibition held at the Chiba Shimin Gallery in Japan.

"Red Harmony" is an abstract painting that does have a sculptural presence in the shapes of the red areas. The lush greens blend various shades into a background that while it does contrast sharply with the reds, it is not in conflict. The overall effect of this work is dynamic in its energy while at the same time harmonious.
One of the original Cass Corridor artists from the 1960s William Antonow studied at the School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts (now the College for Creative Studies) and at Wayne State University, where he received his BFA (1967) and MA (1970.)
Antonow’s first one-person show at the Willis Gallery in 1971, represented a radical departure from his early work – abstract bronzes shown at the Michigan Artists exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1969 and 1970. A founding member of the Willis, Antonow publicized his exhibition with a cryptic invitation stating, “art isn’t anything.” Echoing the challenge implicit in the exhibition announcement, the works in the show consisted of precariously balanced piles of such non-art materials as wood crates and barrels, corrugated paper or cardboard, cellophane and beer cans. These brash, paint-slathered juxtapositions of salvaged objects were perhaps the first example of the nascent “tough art” aesthetic of the Cass Corridor. (Both Gordon Newton’s wood constructions and Bob Sestok’s crude “radio wheels” first appeared in 1972.)
