About the Item

E. Kumaril Swamy - Mahishasur Mardini Watercolour on Nepali Paper 22 x 15 Inches, 1945 (Framed Delivered) E. Kumaril Swamy’s Mahishasur Mardini is a striking synthesis of mythic narrative and modernist line, rendered with the delicacy and dynamism that define his mature style. Executed in watercolour on Nepali paper, the work depicts the goddess Durga in her fierce, triumphant form—mounted on a lion, wielding multiple weapons, and vanquishing the demon Mahishasura. The composition is charged with movement: Durga’s limbs radiate outward in rhythmic arcs, her lion lunges with feral energy, and the demon recoils in anguish. Yet despite the drama, the line remains elegant, controlled, and lyrical—hallmarks of Swamy’s visual language. What makes this work particularly significant is its fusion of spiritual iconography with a modernist sensibility. Swamy does not merely illustrate a myth—he reinterprets it through the lens of abstraction, symbolism, and expressive form. The use of Nepali paper adds a tactile, while the overall composition speaks to his Santiniketan training, where myth and modernity were seen as complementary rather than oppositional. Within Swamy’s repertoire, Mahishasur Mardini stands as a powerful example of his ability to navigate multiple registers—devotional, philosophical, and aesthetic. The goddess here is not just a divine figure—she is a symbol of inner strength, moral clarity, and transformative power. E. Kumaril Swamy (1924–1993) E. Kumaril Swamy was a multifaceted Indian artist celebrated for his lyrical style and mastery across a range of mediums, including watercolour, tempera, fresco, mural, and oil painting. Deeply rooted in Indian artistic traditions, Swamy developed a unique visual language that harmonized classical aesthetics with modernist sensibilities. A student of the legendary Nandalal Bose, Swamy was regarded among his most accomplished protégés-an association that firmly places him within the Bengal School lineage. Bose's influence is visible in Swamy's refined use of line, his earthy yet vibrant palette, and his use of symbolic, narrative-driven compositions. His work sought to revive and reinterpret indigenous visual traditions, drawing inspiration from Indian mythology, rural life, and folklore. Stylized figures and compositions often recall the grace and intricacy of miniature painting, while his watercolours-marked by delicate layering and translucent washes-achieve a luminous, emotive quality. Swamy also engaged deeply with public art, contributing murals to institutional and governmental spaces that reflect both his technical prowess and his cultural commitment. Throughout his career, he exhibited widely across India and was recognized for his originality, his fidelity to traditional forms, and his vital role in shaping a distinctly Indian modernist vocabulary.
