About the Item

Mesmerizing image, ‘The Little Flower Seller’ is reminiscent of Cosette in Les Miserable, her hair blown to one side and her red ribbon flowing out from her hair. She is that unloved child worker. She stands in the night after a long day, in the shadows while the wealthy men in top hats walk the lighted street of London’s theatre scene. The pavement is wet and reflects the red lights of the bustling city. The flower seller stands in rags, her apron is torn, her feet show through her tattered leather shoes. Only black flowers remain unsold.. She leans against a wall advertising the Gaiety Theatre a popular musical burlesque of the day. An eye seems to watch her. Above her head are the words ‘See and Hear’, and on the side, ‘Comic’ and ‘Fun’. The Gaiety Theatre was in Westminster, on Aldwych, east side of the Strand near Covent Garden where flower sellers would purchase their flowers at the Flower Market, then sell them on the streets. It closed in 1903, and may have been in decline when this was painted. The building across the street may be the old theatre that was eventually torn down in 1957. Mulready belonged to a club of artists known as the Cranbrook Club, and was well regarded for his skill. He exhibited regularly in the Royal Academy. His work is represented in the London Museum and other museums and galleries in the UK. This flower seller, more than others by Mulready, is the emblem of poverty and neglect, a child with no one to protect her or care for her. She is one of the street urchins of the time that Mulready chose to dedicate his talents to exposing. While some of his paintings lean toward sentimental this one juxtaposes different worlds with words of satire. Mulready painted various flower sellers, but this one is so forlorn, with sideswept hair, an arresting image of the Les Miserables story. This painting has been lightly cleaned by the Gallerie, but is in very good condition otherwise. Another flower seller of similar size recently sold at Bonhams July 4 2024 for over 4,000 GBP/close to USD $6000. The framing is a simple 1.5” wide wood frame. No value is placed on the frame. The back has an old typewritten biography of the artist. There is an older label from Newton and Windsor, Academy Board. The artist’s signature is on the lower left side of the painting. This gets attention in the Gallerie! Ideal message for the season. Ready to hang.

Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news. There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...
