About the Item

Painted in 1906, "Indian Maiden" by Eanger Irving Couse depicts Antonita Lucero, Ultasulma (Seed of the Falling Leaf), the wife of Ben Lujan, who famously posed for many of Couse's other works. Unlike Couse's more formal studio interiors or narrative scenes depicting Pueblo men engaged in traditional crafts or rituals, this painting captures a lone Native woman in a moment of quiet introspection. The soft, golden tones and diffused light create an almost spiritual atmosphere, transforming a simple scene into a meditation on solitude and reflection. And it's encapsulated by a STUNNING hand-carved, gilded frame that perfectly complements the significance and beauty of the picture. The painting was recently cleaned and restored by the Western Center for the Conservation of Fine Art, and has impeccable provenance. It is listed in Couse's catalogue raisonné under record number 1053 and has a photo study for reference provided by the Couse-Sharp Historic Site (see photo above).
