About the Item

Set in Metz, France before the medieval Porte d’Allemagne, this early large-format pastel captures a city at the threshold of modernity. The scene unfolds on a wintry evening where medieval stone meets the glow of industrial light, and where history and progress coexist on the same icy thoroughfare. Before a glowing train station at dusk, Edouard Cortès captures a world in motion: a locomotive billows steam into the amber sky, a double-decker tram rumbles across icy streets, and bundled figures hurry through the cold. Yet amidst this industrial hum, a shepherd calmly guides his flock of sheep across the scene, a rare juxtaposition that speaks to a city both timeless and changing. Rendered with masterful strokes of pastel, the atmosphere shimmers with reflected light: golden lamps, tram windows, and sunset fire ripple across the snow. At over 3 feet wide, this large pastel immerses the viewer in the poetic rhythm of a city alive with transition. Looming softly on the horizon, the outline of Metz’s Saint‑Étienne Cathedral rises behind the station, its silhouette emerging through steam and dusk, linking the modern bustle to the city’s Gothic heart. Cortès’s choice of pastel intensifies the sense of immediacy: smoke laces into cloud, evening light dissolves into streetlamps, and the glistening roadway mirrors every hue. Figures remain impressionistic, anonymous silhouettes that convey movement and mood, while the tram and steam engine ground the composition with the certainty of modern infrastructure. Édouard Léon Cortès, known as “Le Poète Parisien de la Peinture,” was celebrated for capturing urban life with unmatched grace. This work is not just a painting; it is a window into a fleeting moment, a lyrical vision of a city balancing past and future. Signed lower right.
