About the Item

Edward Alfred Cucuel 1875-1954 American Picnic in the Shade Signed "Cucuel" (lower left) Inscribed and signed "Picnic im Schatten" (en verso) Oil on canvas This stunning oil by Edward Alfred Cucuel captures the artist's signature subject in the splendor of summer. Two elegantly dressed women enjoy a picnic in the shade along the shoreline. The composition unfolds beneath the verdant canopy of leaves, reflecting Cucuel’s masterful command of light and color. Known for his vibrant colors and textured impasto, Cucuel brings a dynamic vitality to his scenes, capturing women in moments of leisurely reverie against sun-dappled landscapes. This painting is a quintessential example of Cucuel’s talent—a magnificent celebration of idyllic beauty and radiant color. Cucuel's paintings are among the finest of all the American Impressionists. Born in San Francisco, he began his formal art training at age fourteen when he enrolled at the city's School of Design. In 1892, he moved to Paris and became a student of the renowned Academic painter Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts. Over the next three decades, Cucuel devoted himself to his painting, working in France, Italy and Germany, and he became an instant success. In 1907, Cucuel established a studio in Munich and joined the Scholle group of artists led by Leo Putz, an important German Impressionist painter and one of the pioneers of Expressionism. It was during this crucial period that Cucuel began to develop his own Impressionist style that would inform his work for decades to come. He exhibited his works in Paris at the prestigious salons and became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and he was awarded a silver medal at the San Francisco International Exposition of 1915. Around the same time, the artist purchased a home in Holzhausen, Germany, overlooking the Bavarian lake where he summered with his family. It is here that he perfected his distinct style and his favorite subject—charming plein air scenes of female figures in gardens and at green shorelines such as Picnic in the Shade. Today, the artist’s works reside in the permanent collections of museums such as the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum in Birkenhead, England and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. Richard E. Miller 1875-1943 American Bathers Oil on canvas on board Emanating the radiant beauty that defines American Impressionism, Bathers captures Richard Edward Miller at his expressive best. Painted during a period shaped by his time among the celebrated Giverny Colony, the work blends atmospheric color, lyrical brushwork and an instinctive sensitivity to light. Its romantic tone and refined handling highlight Miller’s role as one of the most compelling American painters to absorb and evolve the lessons of French Impressionism. In this striking composition, Miller bathes his figures in a warm, glowing light that reveals their elegance and ease. Soft contours and textured strokes create a painterly surface that feels immediate and alive. The shimmering palette of the distant water recalls the brilliance of Monet’s Giverny...

At the Yacht Club
By Edward Cucuel
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Artist Edward Cucuel and his wife Clara Lotte von Marcard spent their first two decades together in Germany, mostly in a villa on Lake Ammersee in Holzhausen near Munich. It is the works created in this period, mainly outdoor scenes of young women in fashionable attire of the day, that are most collected and appreciated among his works. It’s easy to see why- they capture an elegance and sense of calm and easy leisure- of long days in gardens or by the water.  This is one of those captured moments with a well-dressed woman watching the sailing yacht...
