From January 2026, the work of Ellen Valk will be on view and for sale in our gallery.
Our first encounter with this remarkable artist dates back several years. We first saw her work “in real life” during a group exhibition featuring other recent graduates. This exhibition, opened by David, presented Ellen Valk’s colorful portraits. She chose striking combinations of paint and backgrounds. Even then, her portraits were powerful, impressionistic, and narrative in nature. We continued to follow her work closely.
Ellen, in turn, also followed our gallery attentively. We saw her at many of our exhibitions, deeply interested in art, technique, and the stories of other artists.
Over the past two years, we have seen Ellen’s work undergo significant changes. It became clear that she had found her direction, and beautiful series began to emerge. Words such as energetic, vulnerable, narrative, and intimate come to mind when we look at her recent series. Ellen Valk proves to be an artist who continually explores new possibilities, constantly questioning, challenging, and developing herself.
Her paintings are a combination of materials and techniques. Oil and acrylic paint, wooden panels, casting resin, materials and fragments from images, markers, air (bubbles), and anything else that crosses her path and, in her view, serves as an addition to the story that “needs to be told.”
The series she is currently working on—and to which the paintings exhibited and sold in our gallery belong—is titled Workz of Wonder. Small mixed-media works, all brought together under a thick layer of resin. Each composition tells a story in which transparency and layering engage in dialogue.
Artist Vanessa Brasley purchased one of her works and wrote the following about it on Instagram:
“The piece I brought home is called ‘No matter our differences, we all breathe the same air.’ But Ellen told me that if I see something else in it, that’s part of the magic. Her paintings invite you in — not to explain, but to suggest. Like a dream you half-remember. They offer cues, not conclusions.”
A beautiful description: her artworks are like a dream you vaguely remember; the paintings offer only hints—like words in a poem—rather than a complete story or conclusion.
