About the Item
Work on cardboard signed E. Chambon and dated 1950
Dimension with frame :60 x 49 x 6 cm
This captivating work, dated 1950, presents a striking portrait of a young girl captured in a moment of intimate contemplation. The artist chose earthy tones to highlight the textures and depth of the scene. The young girl, dressed in a delicate pink dress, is depicted in a posture that is both innocent and enigmatic, her legs folded under her and throwing her head slightly back. A fascinating aspect of this composition is the use of chiaroscuro, which highlights the contours of his body and creates an atmosphere of introspection. The light seems to emanate from an invisible source, illuminating his face and emphasizing his concentrated expression. The head surrounded by a bright red headband contrasts vigorously with the subtle palette and provides an intense focal point in the work. The detail of the white sock and the circular object, probably a mirror, held in his left hand, add elements of everydayness and symbolism. Her pensive, almost absent gaze hints at emotional depth and personal history, prompting the viewer to deeper reflection on identity and introspection. The background of draped curtains, in dark and neutral tones, frames the main figure and accentuates the intimacy of the scene. The contrast between the dynamic folds of the fabric and the serene stillness of the girl creates a harmonious balance in the composition. Instantly recognizable. The attention to detail and the skill of the technical execution demonstrate the exemplary mastery of the artist.

Emile Chambon (Emile François Chambon), born January 10, 1905 in Geneva, Switzerland, and died October 28, 1993 in Collonge-Bellerive, Switzerland, was a painter and draftsman from Geneva. He is the son of Emile-Joseph Chambon and Joséphine née Coppier. Three years after Emile, his mother gave birth to a daughter, Julia Mathilde Chambon, who, throughout her life, would assist Emile. In the fall of 1921, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, not without difficulty because the school management considered that his family was not well off enough to allow him to embrace a career as an artist.
A first federal scholarship was awarded to him in 1921 and allowed him to stay in Paris where he went with his father. This trip allows him to familiarize himself with the cubist painters. Between 1925 and 1928, he worked with the painter Jean-Louis Gampert, friend of Roger de La Fresnaye; he assists him in his studio, but also for the realization of the decorations of the church of Corsier (Geneva, Switzerland). In 1928 a second federal scholarship was awarded to him, which allowed the young man from Carouge to make a second stay in Paris; he stayed there for about ten weeks, then set off to explore the Louvre Museum where he made numerous copies. But his stay ends more quickly than he had expected, his finances being at their worst; he then leaves behind his friends Chauvet and Van Berchem, with whom he had left, and returns to Geneva. In February 1931, in the continuity of " Raison d'être ", the creation of the " Presence " movement, which wants to be a " action, art and philosophy group " ; Chambon contributed to the review published by the group then directed by Trolliet and Jean Descoullayes. Within the framework of the review, always, it approaches a little more Ferrare which will introduce it near the man of letters Max Jacob in Paris. Ferrare supports Chambon with conviction and is among his first unconditional admirers. The end of the 1930s marks a remarkable progression in the production of paintings by Emile Chambon, the latter going almost to double it compared to the beginning of the decade, and this rate will not run out of steam before the end of the 1960s. .......

Signed upper right, 'C. Mariani' for Carlo Maria Mariani (Italian, 1931-2021) and dated 1959.
Framed dimensions: 22.5 x 1.5 x 17.5 inches
A native of Rome, Carlo Mariani first studied there at the Academy of Fine Arts where he was influenced by the prevailing styles of Hyper-Realism and Conceptualism. In 1994, he moved to New York City where he began to paint figural landscapes in a traditional, neo-classical style. The 1990s brought Mariani wide recognition and numerous honors, as he represented Italy three times at the Venice Biennale. Additionally, in 1998, he received the prestigious Antonio Feltrinelli Award for lifetime achievement in painting.
Mariani continues to be best known for his refined and painterly, Renaissance technique. He was a central figure in Rome’s avant-garde in the 1970s and is widely regarded as an influential forerunner of 1980's Postmodernism. He achieved an international reputation, beginning in the early 1980s, for his arcane and, often, controversial paintings...
