About the Item

One can almost feel the vibrant energy and communal connection in this colorful market scene set along the northern coast of Haiti in the country's second largest city. And yet here the figures, baskets, rooftops, and even the leaves are arranged in an organized, stylized manner. The bright colors and the focus on the gathering and selling goods showcase 20th-century Haitian painter Emm Valcin’s dedication to capturing the richness of Haitian culture and daily activities. Part of a prominent family of Haitian artists, Emm Valcin’s artist relatives include the well-known masters Gerard Valcin, his half-brother Pierre-Joseph Valcin, and nephew Favrange Valcin (Valcin II). As with this painting, Emm Valcin’s most common subjects include market scenes, as well as village life and occasionally Vodou ceremonies. Signature: lower right (photo #5)

The scene depicts a bustling marketplace where vendors and buyers interact, surrounded by piles of tropical fruits arranged in baskets. The figures are dressed in bright, contrasting tones, enhancing the painting’s dynamic and energetic atmosphere. The artist’s expressive, thick strokes and saturated colors create a sense of movement and liveliness. The composition is carefully balanced, with figures arranged in different planes, providing depth and perspective in an intuitive manner. The lush vegetation in the background and the bright blue sky add further context to the scene, situating it in the Caribbean setting.
