About the Item
Beschäftigt man sich heute mit dem Werk von Erich Waske, so stößt man zunächst auf eine ganze Reihe von Begründungen dafür, warum dieser herausragende Künstler so unverdient in Vergessenheit geraten ist. Dazu zählt neben der Zerstörung seines Ateliers und somit eines Großteils des bisherigen Lebenswerks im zweiten Weltkrieg und seiner unangepassten Persönlichkeit auch der achtlose Umgang mit seinem Nachlass. Während Waske in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung des Kunstbetriebs heute ein beinah Unbekannter ist, galt er zu Lebzeiten als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des deutschen Expressionismus, der zum erweiterten „Brücke“-Kreis zählte. Bereits 1921 erschienen zwei Monografien, er stellte mit Schmidt-Rottluff, Kandinsky und Pechstein aus und hatte auch deren – bereits damals sehr hohes – Preisniveau. Dieser Umstand macht Erich Waske zu einer veritablen Entdeckung der Klassischen Moderne in Deutschland.
