About the Item

Ernst Ewerbeck was an important avante-garde painter, illustrator, and graphic artists active in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The artist was born in Aachen, Germany but traveled throughout the country and other parts of Europe for his artistic training. Ewerbeck first studied at the local Academy in Aachen, Germany, then progressed to the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts— Akademie der Bildenden— in Munich, where he studied under the Slovene painter Anton Azbe (1862–1905). Ewerbeck eventually settled in Berlin. In Berlin, Ewerbeck concentrated on painting in oil, often depicting figures, primarily women. The artist was well known during his lifetime and was favorably received, especially for his work that was reproduced in various important German Periodicals, such as “Jugend” First appearing in 1896, "Jugend" was a general illustrated weekly magazine. The novel and fashionable covers were often in a lithographic tone and lavishly incorporated information on clothes in vogue, witty caricatures, and advertisements of the newest goods on the market. Despite the meagerness of each of its issues, composed of not more than 20 pages, the magazine enjoyed a spectacular success in turn-of-the-century Europe, particularly in Munich. The artistic movement "Jugendstil" owed its name to "Jugend" magazine. Jugendstil literally means "style of youth" in German, and is the German analogue to the French Art Nouveau movement. Its creative activities carried out in Munich by progressive artists from the mid 1890's through around 1907. The artistic activities of the period, encompassing fine arts, architecture, furniture, handicrafts, bookbinding, poster designs and fashions, are summarized as "fin-de-siecle" (end of the century) arts, a term which often referred to the work of Ewerbeck. For reasons unknown, Ernst Ewerbeck immigrated to Chile in his later years, and often signed his paintings “Carlos Ewerbeck”. This is probably a result of his ultimately retiring to Chile, where the artist continued painting up until his death. He is recorded as dying in Berlin in 1920. Ewerbeck’s work, Ophelia, was inspired by his exposure to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a school formed by a group of young English artists in 1848 that was at its height during the years Ewerbeck spent in England. The Pre-Raphaelites created an entirely new style of painting that reflected the romance of medieval chivalry while documenting Victorian social themes. Ophelia was a favorite subject for the Pre-Raphaelites who often depicted literary characters from Shakespeare, as well as from the works of Yeats and Keats. Ewerbeck depicted the comely Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet in a style lovely in its precision, realism and thematic content.

Hercules and Omphale Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale. So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger. This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined.
