About the Item
This lovely Victorian 19th century figurative oil painting is by Italian artist Frederick Andreotti. Painted circa 1880 it is a lovely playful depiction of a pretty seated young woman laughing as she is being serenaded by a musician. It is a colourful painting full of charm and good humour and an excellent example of Andreotti's work.
Signed lower right.
Provenance. Collection Don Butlin.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 27 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition.
Frame. Housed a complementary original gilt frame, 34 inches by 27 inches framed and in good condition.
Federico Andreotti (1847-1930) was an Italian painter born in Florence. He initially studied with Angiolo Tricca, Stefano Ussi, and at the Florentine Academy of Fine Arts. At a contest, he won a stipend and ultimately gained appointment as professor at the Academy. He was prolific as a painter of canvases at Rome, Florence, and other cities. He painted realistic genre and aristocratic scenes, often in dress from the eighteenth centuries. The elaborate period dress and affected airs give his paintings, sometimes described as Rococo Revival, a retardataire focus. Frescos by Andreotti also decorate the interior of the Teatro Mario Del Monaco in Treviso.
