About the Item

“Guitar Player in Recife, Brazil, 1886” by Ferdinand Piereck (1844-1925) An extremely rare 19th century painting of a Brazilian guitarist by Austrian-Brazilian artist Ferdinand Piereck. This lively and expressive scene of a man playing the guitar in Recife depicts the subject seated on a stone structure overlooking the sea. He wears a white, loose-fitting shirt, a red sash, and a straw hat, evoking the attire of a working-class musician or fisherman. The artist captures his spirited expression, as if he is singing or engaging with his audience, while his hands strum the guitar. The backdrop features the bustling maritime activity of 19th-century Recife, with ships docked near the harbor and a lighthouse standing against the golden hues of a setting sun. By the late 19th century, the guitar had become a significant instrument in Brazilian music. Introduced to Brazil during the colonial period, the guitar evolved alongside Afro-Brazilian and European musical traditions, becoming a key element of styles like modinha, lundu, and choro. The 19th century saw its widespread use among street performers, sailors, and lower-class musicians, symbolizing the blending of African, Portuguese, and Indigenous cultural influences. Paintings by Piereck during his time in Brazil are scarce, this example being perhaps his finest. It offers a rare first-hand glimpse into Brazilian culture in the 19th century. This work is oil on canvas and is signed and dated in the lower right. It is housed in a black distressed style frame. Size: 26 inches tall by 20.5 inches wide (painting) 31.5 inches tall by 26.25 inches wide by 1.5 inch deep (frame) Provenance: Private collection, CA; Acquired from the above About the artist: Ferdinand Piereck, an Austrian painter born in Vienna on September 10, 1844, relocated to Brazil in the latter half of the 19th century, where he became an active figure in the country's art scene. His collaboration with photographer Carlos Hoenen at Photographia Allemã involved enhancing photographs with painted elements, a practice known as "fotopinturas," which gained popularity in late 19th-century Brazil. He became a naturalized Brazilian in 1901. Condition: Good overall antique condition. Scattered small areas of inpainting to address losses. Light surface accretions with the occasional minor scratch or tiny loss. Faint stretcher bar impressions and surface craquelure commensurate with age. Later frame with intentional distressed look. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed! All photographs are taken in a well-lit environment using studio lights (set to a cooler temperature) to reveal as much detail as possible. Colors can vary slightly depending on the temperature and strength of your lighting.
