Francesco Fontebasso (1707-1769) was an Italian painter of the late-Baroque or Rococo period of Venice. He was the apprentice of Sebastiano Ricci (1659-1734), but he was also strongly influenced by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696-1770). Fontebasso
became, together with Tiepolo, the painter most in demand for pictorial cycles in the palazzi and villas of the Venetian nobility. He mainly worked in Padua, Treviso and Trento, and in 1761 he went to Saint Petersburg where he produced ceiling paintings and decorations for the Winter Palace. This Allegory of Vanity of great pictorial quality was the subject of an expertise in 1984 by Egidio Martini who attributed it to Francecso Fontebasso, presenting it as a certain and typical work by this leading figure of eighteenth-century Venice. The picture shows two little putti, and the composition presents a magisterial chromatic balance, based on a limited but highly sophisticated range of greys and blues, yellow-gold and red.
