About the Item
Manilla-born painter Francisco “Paco” Gorospe (1939-2002) took a detour with this piece. Normally working with colors to rival any spring flower garden, he painted this lovely young women with a tonalist’s palette. Perhaps a girl from his homeland’s native tribes, a favorite subject, she is seated amid her pots and encircled by leaves. But here, reality is dialed back into warm shades of camel and beige. Only her amber face and long ebony hair stand out in the composition, leaving her the center of attention and perhaps keeping you company amid the neutrals in your modernist’s house.
Considered the “Picasso of the Philippines,” Paco Gorospe’s cubist-influenced works were shown internationally, first at the Century 21 Exposition, Seattle’s world fair, and then again at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, representing artistry of the Philippines. He went on to have exhibitions in Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark over the next two decades.
