About the Item

Spring Break Morning Study #1 is a 20 x 16-inch acrylic and collage work on canvas. The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. The image is playful, with a figure in a red suit floating inside a yellow buy. The work is part of the very recent Spring Break series. The artist writes, "Spring break, I was thinking about some of the highlights of my life. Spring break brings me back to my college Years, a time that offered endless possibilities. It was the first time I saw myself as a participant in the American dream and not just an observer". This work is the study for Spring Break Morning #1, a much larger painting measuring 60 x 48 inches. Francks F. Deceus was born in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, moving to NY when he was nine years old, where he has been living and creating ever since. Throughout his career, Francks has developed a unique modernist style where figures distilled to their pure features are layered in an abstract world evocative of our modern society. His work relates to artists like Norman Lewis and Howarddena Pindell in using unconventional texture and rich color and how it focuses on African-American urban life and his community's struggles. Group exhibitions include the Brooklyn Museum, NY; Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts (MOCADA), Brooklyn, NY; The National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, TN; Gallery M, New York, NY; and Hampton University, Hampton, VA. His work is in private and public collections, including Xavier University, New Orleans, LA; Schomburg Center, New York Public Library, NY; Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site House museum, Yonkers; New York, and International African American Museum, Charleston, SC; His work has been featured in publications such as The International Revue of African-American Art and The Village Voice and included in "100 New York Painters "by Cynthia Maris Dantzic.

A Place to Hide - Surrealist Figurative Painting
By Parris Jaru
Located in New York, NY
Parris Jaru's A Place to Hide is a 9 x 12 inches oil painting representing surrealist animals. The primary color is a bright yellow and blue. A glittering paint defines the surface of the canvas. Jaru creates colors from plant-based pigments that Jaru collects during his long exploratory trips through India. The imagery is very playful, presenting surrealist animals drawn with the simplification of forms of some faux-naive art and some graffiti and street artworks. NY-born Parris Jaru comes from a Jamaican, Blackfoot Nation, and Arawak Nation background from both his parents. His work is informed by the vivid colors and imagery experienced in his childhood years spent in the coastal town of St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. His exploratory journeys in India enriched his work with a sensibility to natural plant-based pigments that he grinds with oils for his paintings. In his Brooklyn studio, Jaru brings all these cultural inspirations together. His entire body of work is informed by an intentional childlike, faux-naïve style, constantly shifting between figurative and abstraction. Even though at times, Jaru has been working on somber and entirely figure-free paintings, most of his work is defined by poignantly colored and playful surrealistic figures. Jaru often draws his figures with a continuous line emerging from a thick impasto of paint made with powders of Sea Algae, Hibiscus, Gymnema Sylvestre, and Turmeric.
