Superb oil on canvas from the late 19th century, French School, in the manner of François Boucher.
This composition, of great decorative quality, depicts a lively group of putti animated within a vaporous sky. At the center, one triumphant cherub raises a laurel crown, having struck the heart of the target with his arrows—a symbol of victorious Love. Around him, his companions, disappointed at having missed their mark, gracefully and vividly convey a range of emotions.
Through its painterly virtuosity and galant spirit, the artist follows in the Rococo tradition inherited from François Boucher, while offering an original variation on designs created for tapestry cartoons from the Gobelins manufactory.
