About the Item
Beautiful figurative portrait by American Impressionist Frank Hector Tompkins. One of the most talented and yet underrated artists of the Boston/Munich School. Oil on board, signed lower right and on verso. 15.625" x 11.375" sight, 19" x 14.74" framed. The upper left corner has a crack that has been repaired.
Birth: Born in Hector, New York, in 1847.
Training: He began his artistic education at the Cincinnati School of Design and the Art Students League in New York.
Munich Years (1882–1887): Tompkins spent five years studying at the Royal Academy in Munich under Ludwig von Löfftz. During this time, he won two first-place prizes for painting in 1884 and 1885.
Career and Legacy
Boston Studio: Upon returning to the U.S. in 1887, he established a studio in Boston and became a prominent member of the Boston Art Club. He painted portraits of fellow artists including John J. Enneking along with other members of the arts and intellectual community.
Exhibitions: He was a regular exhibitor at the National Academy of Design (starting in 1881) and participated in shows at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
Artistic Focus: His body of work includes portraits of intellectual figures and landscapes of Boston's waterfront and parks. One of his recurring subjects was "Hester Prynne" from The Scarlet Letter.
Collections: His work is held in prestigious institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Death: He died in Brookline, Massachusetts, in July 1922.
