About the Item

Frans van Mieris the Elder (Leiden 1635 - Leiden 1681) Workshop Elegant company in an interior (or “Self-portrait with his family”) Oil on canvas 50 x 41 cm In a beautiful frame 80 x 72 cm The painting on offer embraces a genre much appreciated by collectors of Flemish painting from the “Golden Age”, which sees the family intimacy that was created within the rich residences of the bourgeoisie of the time, in settings overflowing with ornamental details, as the focus of the work. The genius and success of these images lies in their ability to capture, like a photograph, a particular moment in everyday domestic life, through skilful painting that draws on great attention to detail and the play of light. Our work, in particular, is based on a famous composition by the great Flemish painter Frans van Mieris (Leiden 1635 - Leiden 1681), who, in 1675, depicted himself in a sumptuous drawing room. The painting is now kept at the Palatine Gallery of the Uffizi in Florence **. Considered a masterpiece by the artist, even by ancient sources, the painting had a very long and interesting history: commissioned by Cosimo III de' Medici, a great patron and collector of Flemish works, in January 1674, after countless reminders from the client, it was completed by van Mieris only the following year and sold for the enormous sum of 2,500 florins. The group of figures includes the painter's self-portrait: his features are easily recognisable in the gentleman in the background dressed in a black velvet cloak, while the other figures, according to many critics, could be members of his family, gathered for a concert in a wealthy stately home. The two women in the foreground, with their sumptuous dresses in satin, velvet and precious furs, could be recognised as his wife and daughter: the former is holding a lute, while the latter is seated, savouring wine from a crystal goblet that a boy, perhaps her son, has just brought her. In the artist's typical style, we are presented with a refined work, capable of creating a surprising atmosphere, immediately transporting us back in time to the Golden Age of the Netherlands. It is the small details that make the difference, making each of his works unique, from the golden angel with bow and quiver hanging from the ceiling to the little dog in the arms of the woman in the foreground, the column surmounted by an entablature carved with a classical relief. And then there is the table on the right covered with a green velvet cloth on which a tray of fruit is resting, while a little monkey is munching on a few pieces. ** Frans van Mieris the Elder, Elegant Company in an Interior 1635-1681, Oil on panel, 52x40 Uffizi Gallery, Rembrandt and 17th-century Flemish Room ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work is sold complete with an attractive wooden frame and comes with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...

Galante Scene Vermeer d Utrecht Paint Oil on canvas 18th Century Flemish Old Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Flemish painter of the 18th century - Follower of Jan van der Meer, called Vermeer d'Utrecht (Schoonhoven, verses 1630 - 1692) Courtship scene at the entrance of an inn oil on canvas, 70 x 62 cm. (with frame 80 x 72 cm.) This pleasant genre scene, depicting a young innkeeper conversing amiably with a gentleman as she prepares to serve him wine in a glass goblet that she still holds in her hand, is inspired by the painting made in 1653 by the Dutch painter Jan van der Meer, known as Vermeer d'Utrecht, and today kept in Paris at the Louvre Museum. Set outside an inn or a post station, the scene illustrates the theme of seduction, with the young waitress being courted by the client, a charming traveler with a changing red cloak, who tries to charm her. Yes, it is a work that harmoniously combines the painter's Dutch origins, with the stylistic characters learned during his training in his homeland, with the Italian-like characters learned during his trip to Italy around 1655. In Rome, in particular, he met and collaborated with various authors of the Bamboccianti school, first of all Jan Miel...

Portrait Lady Woman Voet Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century Italian Art
By Jacob Ferdinand Voet (Antwerp 1639 - Paris 1689)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Jacob Ferdinand Voet (Antwerp 1639 - Paris 1689) Atelier Portrait of the Young Ortensia Mancini, Duchess of La Meilleraye (Rome 1646 - Chelsea 1699) Oil on canvas 75 x 61 cm. - exquisite gilded and lacquered wooden double frame 105 x 91 cm. The beautiful painting depicting the young and attractive Duchess Ortensia Mancini is part of the refined portraiture of Jacob Ferdinand Voet (Antwerp 1639 - Paris 1689). Of Flemish origin, the painter achieved great success with the aristocratic families of Rome - where he stayed from 1663 to 1679 - thanks to the famous series of portraits commissioned by Cardinal Flavio Chigi, depicting the most enchanting women of the time, and now housed in the Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia. The paintings became so popular that the artist was repeatedly asked to reproduce replicas and similar versions of them: the 'cabinet des dames' was thus one of the Roman fashions of the 17th century, justifying the large number of female portraits attributable to his workshop that gravitated on the market. Voet flaunted in his portraits a peculiar softness and grace in the rendering of the complexions, a subtle voluptuousness in the description of the lips, entrusted to small brushstrokes of red, a sense of calm fixity in the pose, all characteristics that are immediately reflected in the work under examination. Our young effigy, Hortense Mancini...
