About the Item

➡️Nurse Portrait from WWI⬅️ ⏩It is signed M Chaumet Sousselier⏪ Jeanne Marie Louise Chaumet Sousselier, born on March 30, 1869 – Paris. Died on October 19, 1941 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, (France) Her name was mentioned for exhibition in 1904: Salon des exposants à Paris “Mrs. Widow Marie-Louise-Jeanne Chaumet, born Sousselier in Neuilly-sur-Seine, head nurse at Hospital 233 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, made an almost superhuman effort during the 1918 offensive, spending both days and nights at the hospital to carry out her duties in the sterilization and operating rooms, according to the Official Journal of the French Republic" This passage highlights Marie-Louise-Jeanne Chaumet-Sousselier’s role not only as an artist but also as a devoted medical professional during World War I. As a head nurse, she worked tirelessly in extreme conditions at Hospital 233 during the brutal 1918 offensive, when casualties were overwhelming. Her dedication was so remarkable that it was officially recognized in the Journal Officiel de la République Française, a very formal honor. The note suggests that her firsthand experience of sacrifice, exhaustion, and compassion in the hospital may have inspired her to paint the nurse’s portrait. In this light, the painting is not just a study of a figure in uniform but also a deeply personal testimony, perhaps reflecting her own service or that of colleagues who endured the same hardship. ⭐Medium:⭐ Oil on canvas ⭐Technique: ⭐Impasto painting with brushwork ⭐Size:⭐38.5x46cm / 15.15x 18.1inch with Golden frame: 48.5x57.5cm / 19.1x22.6 inch ⭐Date:⭐(certainly ~ 1914-1918 WWI) ⭐Condition : ⭐ Vivid color. The sitter, a young woman dressed in the pure white uniform and veil of a nurse, is presented with quiet solemnity against a dark, neutral background that brings all focus to her presence. The composition is simple yet commanding, allowing the viewer to contemplate not only her likeness but also the symbolic weight carried by her role. The artist demonstrates superb technical skill in the rendering of the sitter’s features. The face is illuminated with a gentle light that accentuates the natural tones of the skin, the softness of the cheeks, and the calm steadiness of the gaze. Her eyes, slightly shadowed, convey an expression of introspection, even melancholy, as though she has borne witness to experiences beyond her years. The slightly parted lips reinforce this sense of humanity and emotional depth, while the smooth modeling of her skin underscores the artist’s meticulous observation of detail. Her attire is carefully painted, with the folds of the veil and uniform executed in subtle shades of white and gray. This restrained palette is not cold but rather conveys purity, service, and devotion, qualities long associated with both religious and medical vocations. Around her neck, a fine gold chain catches the light, its delicate glimmer introducing a quiet note of warmth and individuality into the otherwise austere image. The necklace, almost understated, might symbolize personal identity or memory within the larger framework of duty and sacrifice. The background is deliberately unobtrusive, a deep, muted greenish-gray that isolates the figure and eliminates distractions. This technique allows the sitter’s face and garments to emerge with clarity and intensity, highlighting the psychological presence of the portrait rather than situating her in a broader environment. The result is timelessness: the woman stands outside of a specific moment, embodying instead the universal virtues of compassion, service, and resilience. The brushwork is controlled, smooth, and precise, reflecting an academic training that privileges faithful representation and subtle gradations of tone. Unlike impressionistic or expressionistic styles of the same era, Chaumet Sousselier opts for restraint, allowing truthfulness and dignity to dominate over flourish or exaggeration. This choice serves the subject well, as it enhances the gravity of the sitter’s role and communicates respect for her vocation. Beyond the technical mastery, the portrait resonates with symbolic meaning. Painted in an era when nurses were often at the forefront of human suffering, particularly during and after wartime, the work becomes more than a likeness: it is a tribute to courage and compassion. The nurse, anonymous and yet deeply individualized, becomes a representative figure for all who dedicated their lives to healing. Her composed expression speaks of endurance, while the white uniform, unblemished and luminous, underscores ideals of purity and sacrifice. The gilded frame, ornate yet balanced, enhances the solemn beauty of the painting. It creates a sense of reverence, almost as if the sitter is elevated to an icon. The overall effect is not of distance but of intimacy: the viewer feels close to her, drawn into her presence and invited to reflect on the human dimension of service. In essence, this portrait by Marie Louise Jeanne Chaumet Sousselier is a work of quiet power. It combines the precision of academic technique with the emotional weight of lived experience, capturing both the individuality of the sitter and the universal virtues she represents. The nurse becomes a symbol of compassion and strength, her likeness elevated to timeless dignity through the artist’s sensitive and respectful hand.
