This painting shows the port city of Cap-Haïtien, located on the North shore of Haiti. It was an important city during the colonial period and has lots of remaining French colonial architecture.
Garry Dorsainvil (he has also signed his work as "Gary Dorsinvil) was born in Cap-Haitian, Haiti. He started to paint with another Cap-Haitian artist, Jean-Baptiste Jean. He is known for his soft pastel colors and street scenes of Cap-Haitian everyday life.
Dorsainville's works have been shown in the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Emmanuel Jolicoeur was born on Christmas day in 1928 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and is the older brother of artist Wilson Jolicoeur. His work can be found in the collection of the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, IA. He was a member of the school Foyer des Arts Plastiques, created by a group of artists who wanted to address and remedy issues plaguing Haitian painters. Jolicouer was known to collaborate with Rene Exume and David Rouzier. In 1967, he moved to the United States, where he has resided since.
