About the Item
No sentimentality on the loose here. Not with the expressions on the mother and her three children all engaged in various forms of 18th-century drudgery on this late summer’s eve. Another is lurking, positively staring from the shadows at the eldest girl, who seems well aware of the life ahead.
Although this picture is unsigned, the genre scene and the unidealized treatment fit right into the output of prominent English painter George Moreland (1763–1804). Known for his focus on rustic scenes, including farms, hunting, depictions of rural life, and landscapes, Moreland’s works often focused on figures like smugglers, gypsies, or peasant families, as seen here.
The wooded background is another link. Moreland was inspired by Dutch Golden Age painting, particularly when depicting foliage and trees, as seen on the right side of this painting.
Skillful lighting of his subjects was another skill Moreland refined in the Dutch style. He chose a good source of inspiration if you recall that the behemoth of stunning lighting in art was a Dutch fellow named Rembrandt. And Vermeer wasn’t too bad either.
Moreland’s work was popular during his lifetime, unusual for an artist, and was often reproduced as engravings underscoring their widespread appeal.

Announcement in Village Square mid 19th century
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news.
There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...
