About the Item
Young woman with long red hair, sun hat and white gown is holding a basket of kittens in this oil painting signed G. V Nuffel, after his figurative paintings from the late 19th century. He often painted figures with animals. This one appears to be in a garden with the young woman holding one of the kittens aloft, smiling admiringly.
George Van Nuffel was a Belgian artist, known for his figurative paintings, often with a pet, from peacock to kitten. His signature, G.V. Nuffel, is in the lower right corner. One of his best known artworks of a little girl sold at Christie’s in 1998 in the UK for the equivalent of more than $25,000. He was most prominent in the late 19th century.
This work was previously in a private collection in the UK. When previously sold there was a very prominent scratch that was later restored. The painting sits very well in an ornate period frame that is also in very good condition.
