About the Item

This original mid-20th-century oil stick on paper by acclaimed American modernist George Vander Sluis (1915–1984), titled Barn Side with Sliding Doors, captures the rustic charm of rural Americana with a striking modernist sensibility. The composition features a gray weathered barn with two windows and bold red-and-white sliding doors, rendered with a sophisticated balance of form, color, and structure. Vander Sluis transforms a simple barn façade into a quietly powerful study of geometry, texture, and atmosphere, exemplifying his mastery of mid-century American landscape abstraction. Professionally presented in a custom black frame, the artwork measures 23 x 27 x ⅞ inches overall, with a sight size of 12 ¾ x 17 inches. In very good vintage condition, the piece retains its vivid colors and textural detail, making it a visually compelling addition to any modernist or Americana-focused collection. About the Artist: George Vander Sluis was a prominent American artist and educator, known for his bold graphic paintings, murals, and influential teaching career. Trained at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Broadmoor Academy, he taught at Syracuse University from 1945 to 1982, serving as Associate Dean of the School of Arts. Vander Sluis earned a Fulbright Scholarship in 1951–52 and was named Outstanding Educator of America by the Ford Foundation in 1975. His works are held in notable collections nationwide. This piece is a rare and elegant example of Vander Sluis’s ability to merge modernist abstraction with the enduring beauty of rural landscapes.

"Barn with Red Doors"
By Joseph Barrett
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Illustrated in "Joseph Barrett, The Prime Years 1970s - 1990s", pg. 28, plate #031. Jim’s of Lambertville is proud to offer this artwork by: Joseph Barrett (1936 – ) Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf. A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet. This little studio, containing cans of old brushes and hundreds of used paint tubes...
