About the Item

Fine late 19th C oil painting on cradled wood panel by George Washington Nicholson. The painting is in very good cleaned condition and shows Surfmen rescuing a ship in distress. This genre of painting was popular during the second half of the 19th century and was famously depicted by the great American painters of the 19th century, including Winslow Home. Nicholson was from southern New Jersey, where volunteer Surfmen first originated. These volunteers threw their heavy surf boats into the pounding surf, and would row to the foundering ships to rescue passengers. Eventually, the surfmen became the US Coast Guard. The painting measures 23" x 32". Framed 30" x 40" Signed lower left.
