Georges DEVY (Active at the end of the 19th century) Oil on canvas 86 cm x 65 cm (96 x 76 cm with the frame) Signed and dated lower left "G. Devy / 1883" Very good condition with a few thinness (even if there is a lining)
Georges Devy was a painter and illustrator of the end of the 19th century. He worked for the newspaper l'Illustration. Devy, for example, represented a sculptor who presents the famous "Immodest Venus" discovered in 1864 on the "Laugerie-Basse" site. As an illustrator, Devy has contributed to several books, for instance the voluminous book by Henri du Cleuziou "The Creation of Man and the First Ages of Humanity" based on the archaeological searches in the Dordogne on the site of Les Eyzies. Devy was a an excellent draughtsman and he worked for the Faculty of Medicine in Paris to produce anatomical plates in the 1870s. In the 1880s Devy also produced some paintings of romantic inspiration with characters in 18th century costumes as in our painting . In our painting can be seen Devy's qualities of drawing and his excellent description of reality. The landscape reminds of Italy, perhaps the Bay of Naples and the sculpture evokes an archaeological site. The sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum were precisely excavated in the middle of the 18th century.
