Gineke Zikken likes to paint outside ' in the subject she shows in her works' . Beside brushes she uses the palet knife to work in large strokes. Her city- and landscapes show beautiful shapes, light and are to mention a crossover of abstract and realistic art.
"Even when I was at the art academy I made sketches in the Amsterdam harbor. There I found what I was looking for. Clear shapes and beautiful colors. Those are still the most important elements in my paintings. Also in the landscapes that are considered more "picturesque". I am always looking for beautiful colors, planes and lines".
Gineke Zikken's work features landscapes in all their extremes. Pastures, rivers, mountain landscapes as 'witnesses of silence and desolation'. Cities, busy streets, industry, harbors with beautiful surfaces, vastness. Her use of color is friendly and soft. Yet she does not shy away from bright colors. In addition to the subdued and calm colours, yellow cranes and towers of containers can be seen in all colours. Despite this great diversity of color and subject, a busy urban landscape, an abandoned industrial estate or a fresh meadow landscape, the artist's handwriting is very recognizable and makes the collection a strong and convincing whole.
