About the Item
Ginger Williams Cook says of her work...
My previous solo exhibition, entitled Abundance of Apollo: The Celestial Gods, Goddesses, and Heroes of Greek Mythology, served as a point of reference for this new body of work, titled The Curse.
The Curse accentuates feminine archetypes within Greek mythology through a lens of reclamation, resilience, and renewal. The series illuminates key figures - Medusa, Persephone, Demeter, Cassandra, and Pandora - as gestural, vibrant meditations on the gravity of inherited myth and ancestral burden. These narrative paintings work to reclaim the reputations of their subjects—not as monsters or collateral damage shaped by a masculine-god-complex, but as figures worthy of autonomy, freedom, and dignity in the face of the gods who sought to control them.
Demeter’s profound grief over her daughter Persephone’s abduction caused a devastating famine that threatened the lives of both mortals and gods. She searched the ends of the earth for Persephone and neglected her duties as the goddess of the harvest. Zeus intervened to halt the famine and to atone for his betrayal, brokering an agreement that allowed Persephone to spend part of the year with her mother and the remainder in the Underworld. This arrangement established the seasons: Demeter’s grief marks winter, while her joy at Persephone’s return becomes spring and summer.
In the painting of Demeter, the use of color reflects the way light shifts in autumn, leaving a warm, red-toned spectrum in the atmosphere. Autumn brings shorter days and encroaching darkness, and the harvest depicted appears dry and flat, echoing the landscape’s depletion.

Ginger Williams Cook is a painter, published illustrator, and arts educator based in Jackson, MS. Her paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions, publications, and media. Ginger's journey into motherhood and coping through art is featured in an HBO Documentary, The Dead Mothers Club. Her painting comparing phantom limb sensation to grief was selected as the documentary's featured poster.
She is an avid sketchbook artist who cultivates an intuitive drawing practice to document the mundane. Ginger uses digital illustration to develop mockups, experimenting with imagery, color palettes, and composition. The techniques in her artwork combine washes of acrylic paint that take shape with colored pencils and pastels, serving as a visual conversation between two hemispheres - the creator and the corrector dancing through a changing process. The common thread in her work is emotional attachment to physical objects, and the power nostalgia has to unlock a memory.

Helene and Eric Bess are a team who have been collaborating for over 20 years. Both are professional artists with extensive experience in both the commercial and fine art fields. They presently work out of their studio in Florida, creating original art for gallery display, fine art crafts and taking commissions for murals & embellishments.
Helene was born in Canada in 1949. She studied art in Europe as a young adult and attended Phoenix Pratt School of Design in New York and St. Petersburg Community College in Florida. She worked for advertising agencies and freelance art projects such as theater design and t-shirt designs for several companies. She owned and operated an art studio (“Artistic Endeavors”) in Melbourne, Fl. for five years. She started doing murals and embellishments (residential and commercial) from 1992 till present. She considers her early life in Europe the major source of her artistic influence as well as the works of Modigliani.
Eric was born in Missouri in 1950. He started drawing literally as an infant and has never stopped. He was taking commissions for book covers & wall designs in his teens and studied art at Auburn University and The University of Alabama. He taught art in public schools in Alabama in the ‘70s. He worked as art director at Huntsville Educational Television for 6 years, as art director at Southern Sportswear in Daytona for 9 years, at Creative Signs & Designs in Flagler, Fl. for 6 years, and as a freelance artist and co-owner (with his wife Helene) of “BessStudio” (formerly “Artistic Innovations Inc.”) since 1998. His artistic influences include Michelangelo, Vermeer, Blake, Maxfield Parish...
