About the Item

Giovanni Costantini (Rome 1872 - 1947), THE LETTER Oil painting on canvas 93 x 88 cm, signed lower left, titled on back. In the years between 1915 and 1921 he painted 45 paintings (The Tears of War) in which with the starkest reality he described, like a modern photojournalist, all the horrors of war. The series, after much controversy, (the painter did not want to participate, given the preconceived opposition of nationalists-then already close to the government-who had accused him of defeatism) was exhibited at the First Rome Biennale (1921) where, contrary to expectations, it was a great success with the public. One of the most beautiful paintings, "The Spy" thus won the First Prize at the Biennale, securing the painter unhoped-for fame, which brought him major commissions.
