About the Item

Giovanni Costantini (Rome 1872 - 1947), IN TRINCEA Oil painting on canvas 156 x 170 cm, signed lower left, titled on back. In the years between 1915 and 1921 he painted 45 paintings (The Tears of War) in which with the starkest reality he described, like a modern photojournalist, all the horrors of war. The series, after much controversy, (the painter did not want to participate, given the preconceived opposition of nationalists-then already close to the government-who had accused him of defeatism) was exhibited at the First Rome Biennale (1921) where, contrary to expectations, it was a great success with the public. One of the most beautiful paintings, "The Spy" thus won the First Prize at the Biennale, securing the painter unhoped-for fame, which brought him major commissions.
