About the Item
The painting (oil on canvas 120 x 96 cm, with gilded and carved wooden frame 140 x 116 cm) is signed and dated at lower right in italics "G. Giordanello 1846"
Little is known about this interesting painter of Romantic culture active in Piedmont in the second quarter of the 19th century.
[...] In 1846, together with an untraced Vulcan at rest, he exhibited at the Promotrice delle Belle Arti the painting here at the studio with the following title: Cain invaded by the thought of fratricide. The work dealt with a theme that had much popularity in the Italian art scene and in the classrooms of the Academies of Fine Arts during the years of Romanticism. The subject matter, in fact, allowed artists to deal with a genre considered high in academic culture, namely that of the so-called heroic nude. The theme, moreover, allowed them to grapple with the difficult challenge of rendering, linked to contemporary theatrical representations, dramatic, powerful and dark feelings such as anger, madness and remorse.
