About the Item

Joyce Thrice Acrylic on canvas board 19 × 27 cm (unframed) Signed: Lower right Condition: Excellent, presented in a gilt frame In Joyce Thrice, Grégoire Mathias continues his exploration of literary multiplicity through Diachronic Cubism, his personal evolution of the Cubist movement. Here, the face of James Joyce appears fractured and reassembled across three overlapping perspectives — a visual metaphor for the Irish writer’s complex narrative structures and his layered sense of time. The rhythmic geometry, shifting planes, and repeated forms evoke both movement and reflection, suggesting not just three portraits of Joyce but three moments of him — coexisting within the same frame. Mathias’s distinctive use of line and tonal modulation creates a composition that is at once analytical and deeply human. Executed in acrylic on canvas board and signed lower right, this work forms a natural companion to Joyce, Twice (of identical size and technique), together embodying the artist’s fascination with perception, repetition, and the simultaneity of experience. Perfect for: Collectors of modern Cubist portraiture and literary-inspired works Art lovers seeking companion pieces that visually explore time, thought, and identity Interior designers sourcing compact statement works with intellectual resonance Collector's Insights Together with "Joyce Twice", this piece forms part of a two-work dialogue examining repetition and simultaneity in both art and literature, though each can of course stand alone. Also a small-format works that represents an accessible entry point into Mathias’s oeuvre. Keywords: James Joyce, Cubist portrait, Diachronic Cubism, French modern art, literary portrait, acrylic on board, collectible contemporary Cubism. About the artist: Grégoire Mathias, graduate of ENSBA Paris, is a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism, an evolution of Cubism that captures movement and time within a single frame. His works have been exhibited at Sotheby’s Périgueux, and galleries in Paris, New York, and Dublin. Since 2020, Mathias has designed posters for the United Nations (WFUNA), making him the first French artist to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. Deplacement, by Grégoire Mathias — Portrait in Diachronic cubism
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Deplacement Acrylic on canvas 60 x 92 cm “Déplacement” (“Displacement”) exemplifies Grégoire Mathias’s signature Diachronic Cubism — a contemporary evolution of Cubism that captures not only multiple perspectives in space, but also the passage of time within a single frame. In this work, intertwined faces and figures emerge through rhythmic geometric planes, suggesting both emotional movement and physical transition. The warm palette of ochre and sienna contrasts with sharp greys and whites, creating a powerful sense of fragmentation and reunion. Subtle red linework recalls the artist’s architectural precision, while the composition’s temporal layering evokes fleeting moments suspended between past and present. This piece reflects Mathias’s ongoing exploration of the human form through temporal geometry — a visual dialogue between motion, memory, and identity. Collector’s Insight: This work belongs to the artist’s larger inquiry into time and perspective, where emotion and structure coexist. It offers a bold yet intimate statement for modern interiors or collectors drawn to the lineage of Cubism reimagined for the 21st century. Perfect For: Collectors of figurative or abstract Cubism • Modern and contemporary interiors Collector’s Insight: This work belongs to the artist’s larger inquiry into time and perspective, where emotion and structure coexist. Natalya Prager was born in Moscow, Russia in 1938, the daughter of a famous Russian artist Vladimir Prager. She began her life as a ballerina studying at the Bolshoi Theater Ballet School. As a young woman she participated in the Bolshoi Theater performances, but the rigorous training damaged her health. Her exposure to music at a young age certainly influenced the subjects of her future endeavors in art. Her works are lyrical and with observation tell an intimate story. Encouraged by her father, she turned to painting and became a student at the Moscow College of Art. She had two exhibitions of large canvases to critical acclaim at the First Exhibition of Young Painters in Moscow when she was eighteen years old. After marrying her fellow artist Igor Kononov in 1957, she expanded her work in many different different areas, including book illustrations, circus and stage design, and puppet making for a children’s TV channel, receiving critical success and broad recognition. Prager- Kononov came to the United States with her husband and son in 1975. The first years were extremely difficult, but they never looked back. The family settled in Staten Island, New York and since 1985 in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Natalya displayed her works in some of the most prestigious locations in New York City including 57th street and SOHO galleries, Lincoln Center Gallery, Staten Island galleries and many others throughout the country. Her final show, jointly with her husband, was produced by Somerset Arts Association in 1999. Animals had a special place in Natalya’s life and art. Some of the enchanting New York City Toy Center soft animal toys had been designed by her and continue to bring joy to children of the world. Many national and local newspapers published extensive articles and personal interviews praising her enchanting work as a door to the Bewitching Fairy Kingdom...
