About the Item

Venise II 65 x 54 cm Acrylic on Canvas Venise II by Grégoire Mathias reinterprets the essence of Venice through a fragmented and dynamic cubist composition. Using Diachronic Cubism, Mathias layers multiple perspectives into a single scene, creating a sense of fluid movement within the architecture. The palette of cool blues, warm ochres, and soft neutrals evokes the shimmering reflections of Venetian canals, while angular shapes and intersecting lines suggest staircases, domes, and bridges dissolving into time. Perfect For: Collectors of cubist cityscapes and architectural abstraction, interior designers seeking a sophisticated statement piece, and art enthusiasts drawn to Venetian-inspired compositions with modernist energy. Keywords: Diachronic Cubism, Greg Mathias, Venetian cityscape, cubist architecture, abstract Venice painting, modern cubism, contemporary French artist, fine art collection. About the artist: Grégoire Mathias, graduate of ENSBA Paris, is a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism, an evolution of Cubism that captures movement and time within a single frame. His works have been exhibited at Sotheby’s Périgueux, and galleries in Paris, New York, and Dublin. Since 2020, Mathias has designed posters for the United Nations (WFUNA), making him the first French artist to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. "San Marco, Venice" by Grégoire Mathias – Cubist Acrylic Painting on Canvas
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
San Marco, Venise Acrylic on Canvas 60 x 49 cm Signed lower right and on the reverse In San Marco, Venise, Grégoire Mathias translates the timeless elegance of Venice’s architecture into his distinctive language of Diachronic Cubism — a style that captures not only multiple spatial perspectives but also the passage of time within a single composition. The familiar arches and reflections of the Venetian lagoon dissolve into an intricate interplay of geometric planes and shifting tones of turquoise, ivory, and sand. The result is a composition that feels both architectural and fluid — an echo of light dancing on water, where memory and presence coexist. Mathias’s mastery lies in how he balances structure and emotion, transforming an iconic cityscape into a meditation on rhythm, space, and movement. Perfect For: Collectors of modern Cubism • Venice and Italy enthusiasts • Contemporary interiors with neutral or coastal tones • Living rooms or entryways seeking architectural depth and movement Collector’s Insight: This painting belongs to Mathias’s Venetian Series, where he explores the interplay between history and modernity through cubist fragmentation. Its soothing palette and elegant balance make it a perfect statement for collectors drawn to contemporary reinterpretations of classic European subjects. Promenade by Grégoire Mathias – Geometric Cubist Composition in Earth Tones
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Promenade Acrylic on wood 33.1 x 21.8 cm A compact yet striking cubist composition by French artist Grégoire Mathias, “Promenade” explores human figures through layered geometries and rich earth tones. “Promenade” is a refined, vertically oriented work in acrylic on wood panel by French artist Greg Mathias, a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism—an evolution of Cubism that doesn’t just fragment space, but also folds multiple moments in time into a single frame. In this composition, a solitary figure appears mid-step, portrayed through overlapping forms that subtly shift in posture and position, evoking successive instants of the same walk. Using a palette of earthy ochres, rose-beige tones, slate blues, and deep browns, Mathias blends geometric abstraction with temporal movement. The fractured background enhances the impression of both forward motion and layered time, suggesting the silent passage of moments within a single contemplative scene. Unlike traditional Analytical Cubism, which reduces forms to a still, spatial analysis, this piece embodies motion and transformation—hallmarks of the artist’s unique visual language. Compact in size but conceptually expansive, “Promenade” invites the viewer to witness the echo of steps already taken and those just about to occur. Perfect For: Interior designers sourcing vertical wall art...

"Venice Canal, Italy" Claude Venard, French Post-Cubist Mid-Century Modern
By Claude Venard
Located in New York, NY
Claude Venard (French, 1913 - 1999) Venice Canal, Italy, circa 1950-55 Oil on canvas 24 x 24 inches Signed lower center Provenance: Private Collection, Massachusetts The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Galerie Felix Vercel. Claude Venard was a notable exponent of the French mid-century post-Cubist movement. He was born to bourgeois parents from Burgogne in Paris, on March 21, 1913. At the age of 17, he enrolled and attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but remained for only two days, not adhering to the school's academic style. Instead, he spent the following six years at the École des Arts Appliqués, taking evening classes and embracing the contemporary Parisian art scene, all the while becoming recognized in its circles. Not able to support himself as an artist, by 1936 he found employment as a restorer at the Louvre, further honing his artistic skills. Paris of the period was dominated by an art trend that strongly favored abstraction. Following a group show at the Galerie Billet-Worms in 1935, art critic Waldemar George declared: "Let's be young again! Painting is not dead… Its course has not stopped. Forces Nouvelles is born." Venard contributed and initially adhered to the strict disciplines of the Forces Nouvelle group. But as with many of his fellow members, he soon abandoned it seeking individual expression. Following WWII, Venard rekindled friendships with past Forces Nouvelles members, joining Pierre Tal-Coat, André Marchand, André Civet...
