Guido Reni (1575-1642) was an Italian Baroque painter. He mostly painted religious works, but also mythological and allegorical subjects. He was active in Rome, Naples and in his hometown Bologna where he became the dominant figure in the Bolognese School.
The work depicts a male head inspired by the model of the so-called “Ripa Grande Slave” (Schiavo di Ripa Grande), an ancient sculpture taken up during the 17th century in painting. When Guido Reni firstly arrived in Rome, was very interested in the “Ripa Grande Slave” subject. The pictorial drafting is very much in the style of Caravaggio, and it is typical of a young Guido Reni. So, this head inspired by the so-called “Ripa Grande slave” was executed by Guido Reni around 1600. An X-ray exam conducted on the painting, has shown a drawing of another head under the pictorial layer. The drawing of the head that emerged from the examination is of the highest quality and it is presumed to be the work of Caravaggio. As a young man, while in Rome, Caravaggio worked in contact with various artists' workshops, so the head underneath Reni’s painting may have been produced while Caravaggio was at Antiveduto Grammatica's workshop, and subsequently Guido Reni re-used that same canvas.
