Antique Italian Orientalist watercolour of a market square by Rosati
Italian, Late 19th Century
Paper: Height 36cm, width 52cm
Frame: Height 62cm, width 78cm, depth 4cm
This late 19th century Orientalist watercolour, created by esteemed Italian artist Giulio Rosati (1857–1917), captures the energy and vibrancy of a Middle Eastern marketplace. A master of Academic and Orientalist painting, Rosati distinguished himself from many of his peers by never visiting the region first-hand. Instead, he relied on a wealth of artistic resources—such as literature, photographs, and other visual references—to craft imaginative and richly detailed depictions of Middle Eastern life.
In this composition, a market scene unfolds, teeming with figures dressed in traditional garments. At the forefront, two men and a young boy engage in what appears to be a discussion. To their left, a small group is seated on the steps, their relaxed postures. Meanwhile, on the right side of the piece, a more active scene takes shape, with individuals carrying vessels or guiding their animals through the streets.
The architectural elements in the background provide a Middle Eastern setting, bathed in warm, golden sunlight. While Rosati employs the signature earthy tones commonly associated with Orientalist art, he elevates the composition with a striking array of vivid hues enhancing the dynamism and realism of the scene.
Encased in an elegant, gilded frame, the painting is signed ‘Giulio Rosati’ in the lower right and inscribed in the lower left with ‘R.W.S./ 6. PALL MALL’.
A distinguished work by a celebrated artist, this captivating painting makes for a striking addition to any fine art collection.
