The Adoration of the Shepherds, 16th Century HANS VON AACHEN (1552-1615) Large 16th Century German Old Master depiction of the Adoration Of The Shepherds, oil on copper Hans Von Aachen. Excellent quality and condition devotional scene of the Adoration of The Shepherds presented within its original antique hand carved and gilded tabernacle frame. Measurements: 31" x 24" framed approx Provenance; Honiton Fine Art, Devon [no.OP52] Rosebery's, London, 2008 Artist Biography Johann Aachen named himself after the town of Aachen, Germany, where his family came from and where his father was born. He showed a remarkable talent for drawing from a very young age and as a result was sent, at 16, to study under Jerrigh, a Flemish painter who had settled in Cologne. Aachen worked as his apprentice for nearly six years, studying the works of Spronghen in particular, who was then at the height of his fame. He went to Venice around 1574, where the works of Tintoretto made a profound impression on him. In 1575, he went to Rome, where his works attracted attention. He remained in Italy until 1587. He subsequently went to Cologne and then Munich in 1589, on the invitation of William V, Duke of Bavaria. From 1592, he worked as a painter to the court of Rudolf II, which moved to Prague in 1596. He was one of several court artists sent around Europe by Rudolf II to buy works of art for the imperial collection. In 1602, he was awarded the title of advisor to the emperor. He kept his title and duties after the death of Rudolf and the accession of Emperor Matthias. Among the principal works that made his reputation is a Nativity, which was his first altarpiece, painted for a chapel in the Jesuit church. He painted the portrait of the famous musician Madonna Venusta, arranging the canvas to portray her playing the lute and adding himself holding a goblet of wine. He then painted in Florence the portrait of the poet Madonna Laura. In Munich, Aachen painted a Resurrection, which was engraved by Raphael Sadeler, and Helena, Mother of Constantine, Discovering the True Cross. William V commissioned him to paint a portrait of him and members of his family. In Prague, Aachen painted a canvas depicting Venus and Adonis, and its success secured him a permanent post at the imperial court. Despite his interest in Tintoretto’s work, the predominant influences on his own paintings seem to be those of Spranger or Correggio. Aachen is considered to be one of the first artists to attempt to replace Gothic style with Italian concepts. His Bathsheba Bathing is generally considered to be his masterpiece. His tombstone, erected by his widow, Regina de Lassus, the daughter of the famous musician de Lassus, was discovered in Prague in 1790 and confirms the dates of his birth and death. Aachen is considered to have prepared the ground for the advent of Baroque in Bohemia. His work has featured in thematic exhibitions: Eros and Myth: Art at the Court of Rudolf II(Eros und Mythos: Kunst am Hof Rudolfs II) at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (1995); and Praga Magica. Art in Prague under Rudolph II (Praga Magica. L’Art à Prague au temps de Rodolphe II) at the Musée Magnin, Dijon, France (2002).
